Bryan Adams - The ’90s Movie Soundtrack Guy

Posted by: The 90s Guy In: Music

['90s Guy note: I was without internet access on Monday and wasn't able to post this then. I apologize.]

For the record, I don’t mind Bryan Adams. Sure, his music is, for the most part, pretty girly. Also, he has aged horribly. Observe:

In the ’80s: full of life, youth, and mullet-y goodness.

And today, with Elle MacPherson, looking wrinkly and desperate to hold onto his youth with that hair.

But, as always, I digress.

I wanted to post a nice musical tribute to the guy with all of his greatest hits, like “Summer of ‘69″, “Heaven”, and “Heat of the Night”. Sadly, these were all songs from the ’80s. And we all know there are plenty of ’80s sites out there. Go there. No, wait. Don’t do that. Ignore the ’80s and stick around here. I’ll make it worth your while.

Anyhoo, our platinum-selling artist did have some big ones in the ’90s, two of which (well, the only two, really) were parts of “you wouldn’t have guessed this movie” soundtracks.

“Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?”

Yes. Yes I have.

This 1995 hit was released on the soundtrack to a movie called Don Juan DeMarco, a film where Johnny Depp plays a guy who thinks he’s the legendary lover Don Juan. Presumably, he looked really dreamy in that weird, deep kinda way throughout the entire movie. We’ve all heard this song, but who’s seen the movie? Honestly?

At least this pairing makes sense, not like our next example:

Could there be a bigger hit for this man? When you think Bryan Adams, you think of this song. Of course, that would mean you were independently thinking of Bryan Adams, and that, to me anyway, is a little weird. This song was a HUGE hit, and people everywhere felt the need to crank it up on their car radios and belt it out at the top of their lungs despite the fact that they can’t hit any of the high notes (not that I speak from experience or anything).

So what 1991 movie could this have been from? Beauty & The Beast? Father of the Bride? Fried Green Tomatoes? Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey?

Sadly, no. It was on the soundtrack to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Yup, Kevin Costner played our friend Hood, who shot people with bows and arrows and stole things. Nothing says “love” like bows and arrows. Just ask Cupid.

Anyway, the interesting story about this song is that the composer wanted it to be Maid Marian singing it to Robin Hood, so he was looking for a chick to sing it. Bryan Adams was brought in instead and wrote/recorded the song, which the film company hated. Adams refused to change it, so the film company - clever folks that they were - buried the song at the end of the closing credits. People apparently stuck around long enough to hear the song, and the rest is history.

Bonus ’90s Song: “Please Forgive Me”

I always liked this one, even though it took some of the words of Jesus and turned it into a cheesy love song. Released in 1993, it is Adams’ only Australian #1 single not written for a motion picture. Bet you didn’t know that. Enjoy!

Why The '90s?

Because no one knows how to pronounce "The '00s". That's why.
